August 27, 2008 – Bill Vaughn: You Choose the Topic!

Description:  We’re going to be having a presentation by INETA speaker Bill Vaughn at our next meeting.  And you get to choose the topic!  Bill has offered four presentation topics that he will to allow us to choose from at the meeting.  The four topics are:
    • Visual Studio Reporting - ReportViewer control, RDL, Reporting Services, in Visual Studio 2008 and SQL 2008
    • SQL Server CLR Executables – Developing CLR executables
    • ADO.NET Connecting – Everything you want to know about connection strings, connecting to servers, and monitoring the connection pool
    • SQL Server Compact Edition – An overview of the compact edition in comparison to other SQL editions, including an overview of the AND.NET 3.5 Sync Services.

You can find more detailed overviews of each session in the forums section of the group site.  So come to the meeting ready to vote for your favorite topic.

We’re also working on organizing an open space session with Bill Vaughn in the afternoon before the meeting.  Stay tuned for more details, but do get it on your calendar.

Bio:  William (Bill) Vaughn is an industry-recognized author, mentor and subject-matter expert on Visual Studio, SQL Server, Reporting Services and data access interfaces. He’s worked in the computer industry for over thirty-five years. In 2000, after 14 years at Microsoft, Bill stepped away to work on his books, mentoring and independent training seminars. His latest are Hitchhiker’s Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server (7th Edition) and Hitchhiker’s Guide to SQL Server Compact Edition. He and Peter Blackburn also wrote the critically acclaimed Hitchhiker’s Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services. He’s available for consulting, mentoring or custom training. In addition to the main presentation, we will have a grok talk (ten minute presentation):

    Title: Introduction to jQuery

Description:  Thanks to modern frameworks, creating cross-browser compliant, rich user experiences via JavaScript doesn't have to be painful. This talk will provide a brief overview on how to use the jQuery library to access and change elements and their properties, animate elements on the page, and interact with server side processes via AJAX.  We'll see how jQuery's rich syntax allows you to leverage CSS selectors to find elements and how jQuery's extensive plugin library makes it easy to add new, dynamic functionality to a page.

Bio: Rich Reuter has been developing software for 8 years. He has recently joined Sogeti as a Senior Consultant for the Microsoft Practice. Rich's primary focus is web development on the ASP.NET platform, and he likes working on all facets of web applications.  He is also a proponent of TDD and Agile principles. When not developing, Rich enjoys playing music and cooking.  See http://www.richreuter.com and http://twitter.com/rich36.

Choose a topic for the August 27 meeting with Bill Vaughn

Although the real vote will happen at the meeting, this is a poll to get an idea of which topic people are most interested in.  Here's a longer description of each topic:

    • Visual Studio Reporting. The inside scoop on how to get the most out of the new ReportViewer control and how it's evolved in Visual Studio 2008. This discusses how to leverage your Reporting Services skills and RDL reports to create application-based reports and how to manage the myriad of issues that come up when trying to emulate Reporting Services functionality like parameters, connections, pick-list population and much more. This session previews the SQL Server Reporting Services technology coming with SQL Server 2008.

    • SQL Server CLR Executables. This walks you through the development process of creating each of the CLR executables. We'll talk about what kind of executables make sense and which won't. I'll show examples that have never been shown by anyone else that really push the CLR executable technology to the limits. This is a fairly advanced session, but very popular among both SQL Server developers and DBAs wondering if CLR executables are a path to better performance or just more problems.

    • ADO.NET Connecting. This is one of my most popular talks. It walks through the maze of issues that developers from all parts of the universe (except Cleveland) encounter when trying to connect. We'll see how to determine which servers are visible, how to make servers visible (and hide them), how to determine if they're running or stopped, how to know when they go down and what to do when it happens. More importantly, we show how to build a ConnectString that can be seen from the Profiler, make sure that your ASP application does not bite the dust because it has overflowed the pool, how to monitor the pool and far more.

    • SQL Server Compact Edition. Based on my EBook, this new talk answers the questions: "Where does SQL Server Compact Edition fit? How is it different than SQL Server, JET or other database engines? How is it installed and deployed? How are databases created and populated? How are databases accessed, replicated, maintained and protected? Since SQL Server Compact Edition promises to replace JET, we'll also discuss whether or not that's possible. Everyone will leave with a complete understanding of which DBMS to choose when addressing data access application requirements. We also talk about where this engine fits in with the new Local Data Cache class in Visual Studio 2008 as well as provide an overview of ADO.NET 3.5 Sync Services.

    • Visual Studio Reporting (25%)
    • SQL Server CLR Executables (0%)
    • ADO.NET Connecting (0%)
    • SQL Server Compact Edition (75%)
    • Total Votes: 4
    • Voting Ended: 8/27/2008

Re: August 27, 2008 – Bill Vaughn: You Choose the Topic!

In addition to the presentation, Bill Vaughn has also agreed to meet with interested user group members the afternoon of the meeting.  So we will be having an "Open Space with Bill Vaughn" the afternoon of August 27.  We'll be meeting in the community room at Dorothy Lane Market in Springboro, which is just down the road from our normal meeting location at Max Technical Training.  The community room is on the second floor of the store; there's an elevator to the right when you come in and stairs a little farther in to the left.  We will be starting at 3:00 and go to approximately 5:30 when we will move on to the meeting.  I'm sure it will be a great opportunity to meet Bill and talk with him and your fellow group members.
