  • O'Reilly at TechEd

Going to Orlando for Microsoft TechEd Developer Week? Please come on by the O'Reilly booth, #1414, in the exhibit hall to say hello. On hand will be John Osborn, Senior Editor; Laurel Ruma, Associate Editor; Kathryn Barrett, Publicist, and me--Marsee.

In addition to meeting you and saying hello (we always like to put a face with the name), we'd love to hear what you think about our books and other offerings. Are we covering the technologies you need to get your job done, and are we doing it in a timely manner and at the right level of detail? What else could we be doing that you'd find useful?

We're constantly asking ourselves what we can do better, but there's nothing like hearing it from the people we write for. If you've wanted to write for us, come share your ideas.

Here's what we have going on during the show:

    - Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/OReillyatTechEd and find out what we’re up to--you might win a free book.

    - Learn how to write tech books and online sites at the “Getting Your Ideas Published Online and in Print” Birds-of-a-Feather session, moderated by O’Reilly author Brad Jones and editor Laurel Ruma (BOF856 June 4 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM)

    - Do you have an O’Reilly t-shirt at home? Be one of the first 50 people wearing one to our booth and receive a copy of the LINQ Pocket Reference. And be part of our T-Shirt Photo Collage

O’Reilly is also sponsoring some of the awesome events that will be going on--so come on by and support the community!

    WEBINAR
    Writing LINQ Queries
    with LINQPad
    PRESENTERS
    Joseph Albahari
    John Osborn
In this webinar, Joseph Albahari, author of C# 3.0 in a Nutshell, the LINQ Pocket Reference, and the upcoming C# 3.0 Pocket Reference, provides an introduction and brief tutorial to LINQPad, the querying tool that's sweeping the .NET world. This is a must-attend webinar for anyone working in C# 3.0 and .NET Framework 3.5. RSVP Now and we'll send you a reminder!Date: Feb. 20, 2008, 2:00pm PST (5:00pm EST)

    oreilly.com/go/webinar-linq
    Teleconference dial-in: +1 617 231-0350 and pin 2847688

    About LINQPad

Tired of querying in antiquated SQL?Well, you don't have to! LINQPad lets you interactively query SQL databases in a modern query language: LINQ. Say goodbye to SQL Management Studio!LINQPad supports everything in C# 3.0 and .NET Framework 3.5:
    • LINQ to SQL
    • LINQ to Objects
    • LINQ to XML
LINQPad is also a great way to learn LINQ: it comes preloaded with 200 examples from the recently released C# 3.0 in a Nutshell. There's no better way to experience the coolness of LINQ and functional programming. And LINQPad is more than just a querying tool: it's a code snippet IDE. Instantly execute any C# 3.0 or VB 9 expression or statement block!Best of all, LINQPad is free and needs no installation: just download and run. The executable less than 2 MB and is self-updating.

Joseph Albahari is a core C# design architect at Egton Medical Information Systems, the largest primary healthcare software supplier in the UK. He has been developing large-scale enterprise applications on .NET and other platforms for more than 15 years, working in medical, telecommunication and education industries. Joseph specializes in writing custom components and controls, and has designed application component frameworks for three companies.John Osborn is a senior editor with O'Reilly Media, Inc., responsible for Windows and .NET developer books, PDFs and other content. When he's not at his desk in Cambridge, MA you're likely to find him on his bike, in a kayak, or cross-country skiing.

What people are saying about LINQPad:
Chris Sells says he loves what the Albahari brothers (Joseph & Ben) have done with their new book C# 3.0 in a Nutshell, and it's not just their prose he praises but a nifty tool for learning LINQ that they call LINQPad: "I have learned a bunch of stuff about LINQ I didn't know, they built a tool (LINQPad) that lets you experiment with LINQ interactively in a way that the designers of LINQ themselves don't support and the tool has all kinds of wonderful features that LINQ, SQL and Regular Expression programmers alike will want to use regularly long after they've read the book."
    Blogger Richard Bushnell agrees:
"I've been trying to learn LINQ. Chris Sells recommended C# 3.0 in a Nutshell, which has turned out to be really good. The name of the book doesn't really do the LINQ part of it any justice - it could have been called C# 3.0 and LINQ, as the LINQ section is so good. If you want to learn LINQ in depth, with an easy to follow explanation, C# 3.0 in a Nutshell is a great option. Along with the book, the author created a small application called LINQPad. It's absolutely fantastic for learning LINQ with. And best of all, it's free."
